Government to maintain support for Green Belts

Planning Minister Nick boles has indicated that the Government will consider intervening to support local communities and councils which wish to protect the countryside and in particular green belts which are threatened. The message was given in a letter to the Planning Inspectorate chief executive, Sir Michael Pitt, following a recommendation by a planning inspector that Surrey District Council should undertake a review of its green belt boundaries. He said that ‘The NPPF makes clear that a Green Belt boundary may be altered only in exceptional circumstances and reiterates the importance and permanence of the Green Belt.’ He requested that his letter be circulated to all planning inspectors.
