There has been widespread disappointment about the progression of the Heritage Protection Review, but we are assured by English Heritage that many of the proposed measures can be implemented without the need for legislation. HTF also believes that there are many measures already available to local authority officers to protect the historic environment and continues to work to build confidence to use these ?? for example Article 4 Directions. Local listings are already favoured by some authorities and the use of Conservation Management Plans, although no longer a BVPI requirement, can help to support cases and can offer a useful mechanism to develop partnerships with local amenity groups.
HTF will continue to work with English Heritage towards better heritage protection and will be concentrating on these issues at the Annual Conference, which will be held in Chichester on 21-23 October. More details soon.
